At 24 hours (circles), 36 hours (triangles), 40 hours (squares), and 48 hours (stars) after inoculation onto agar plates, 5 colonies of each of our fluorescent strains, PaceB-gfp (red), Pacs-gfp (blue), and PgapA-gfp (green), were imaged and measured. The lines indicate the height and width of modeled colonies (with regulation) over 48 hours of growth. These colonies were simulated with different values for ρ _max ranging from 0.50 to 0.80. The main simulations presented in the text use a value of 0.65 taken from the literature [15], and appear as the black line. The step-like features along these lines are artifacts of the discreteness of the spatial model. The simulations overestimate colony height early on, but their height-to-width ratios shows strong agreement at later time points.
